That are also surprisingly versatile

If you are someone who is looking to have a one-watch collection, a simple and classic dress watch is the way to go.

Why?

Well, despite being called a “dress watch,” it is an extremely versatile timepiece. Looks great with a suit. Looks great in a business casual setting. It’s simple enough to go with most casual looks. And fits perfectly in a formal setting.

There are plenty of choices out there when it comes to dress watches at various price points, but if you want to step up into a luxury category–to celebrate a milestone, to have something special to pass down someday–let us recommend five of our favorites.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin

I’ve been a huge fan of Jaeger-LeCoultre for quite a while. In fact, it is one of my favorite watch brands. I appreciate the fact that the brand is somewhat under the radar amongst the general public and that those running the brand don’t really mind that fact. It’s part of the allure–if you know, you know. While perhaps not as well known as the Reverso, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master collection is a sleeper, in my opinion. Simple. Elegant. Understated. Price as shown: $16,300.

Vacheron Constantin Patrimony

People tend to have a kind of, what I’ll call, “cilantro reaction” to Vacheron Constantin–you either love them or your hate them. Their Overseas sports watch is definitely a love-hate proposition. However, a classic Patrimony checks all the boxes for timeless style and horological mastery. Price as shown: $21,500.

Patek Philippe Calatrava

In these times, it can be easy to think about many brands in terms of what blue dial steel sports watch they’re offering. And with Patek Philippe, of course, it’s the 5711. While the 5711 might be the hot watch right now, Patek is really known for their old school elegance as displayed here with a classic Calatrava. It is singular. And in a word: perfect. Price as shown: 20,800.

Audemars Piguet Jules Audemars Extra-Thin

You’d certainly be forgiven if you thought, “Wait, Audemars Piguet makes dress watches?!” Although known primarily for their revolutionary Royal Oak model, AP makes some pretty serious dress watches as well. This Jules Audemars Extra-Thin stands as a perfect illustration. Price as shown: $30,000.

A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Thin

I have a similar affinity for A. Lange & Söhne as I do for Jaeger-LeCoultre. They’re another pretty under the radar brand that you must be a true connoisseur to know and love. The brand’s flagship model, the Lange 1, is a modern classic with a design language all its own. And while the Saxonia This is much more reserved in terms of design, it is pure perfection all around. A true watch-lovers watch. Price as shown: $15,400.

So How Do You Choose?

It’s true that in terms of overall style, our five picks here do look quite similar. Of course, there are many subtle design differences–many specific to their respective brands–and movements, but in the most general sense, they’re all quite similar–they’re simple, round dress watches. So how does one choose?

Obviously, price plays a role, however, let’s put that aside for a moment, because if you’re considering getting into the luxury category, I’m going to wager that although price may certainly be on the mind, it’s not going to play a totally outsized role in your decision.

What it really comes down to at this level is figuring out which brand resonates with you most. Are you a JLC guy? Are you a Patek guy? Are you a Vacheron guy? Are you an AP guy? Or are you a Lange guy? Do your research into each brand. Find out their history. Get to know the broader collections. And as I mentioned, each brand has their own little particular design quirks and signatures–which of those ignite your curiosity and passion? Of course, the best way to really make a decision, is to see the watches for yourself and try them on your wrist.
