8 Affordable Basics That’ll Level-Up Every Outfit You Wear

When I’m stuck in a style rut, it might surprise you to learn that it’s not trend-led or statement pieces that will break me out of it—instead, I take a look at my basics, items which my wardrobe is built upon, and try to identify any gaps I may have. Nine times out of ten, buying a fresh basic can help me unlock a fresh slew of outfits and rekindle love for pieces I already own. Still, although I see great value in investing in basics, I never like to spend tonnes of money on them. Shop right and I fully believe that you can find affordable basics that live up to the quality of their more expensive counterparts. You just have to know where to look. And it just so happens that I do.

Mixing and matching has never been as effortless as when you have a strong foundation of basics to dress with, and I’ve listed eight such items that are currently the most-worn in my rotation and that you can snap up affordably. I know the the term “affordable” means different things to different people; I’ve ensured everything you see before you comes in under £100, and many pieces will be significantly below that threshold.

First on the list is a classic racer vest that forms the basis of countless ensembles, from casual denim looks to layering under statement jackets. A trend-proof pair of blue wash jeans follows suit, seamlessly transitioning from day to night. Right now, fashion people like their denim with a little slouch, so that’s where I’ve focused my efforts. Then, slide into a tailored blazer for an instant touch of polish that complements any outfit.

With these affordable basics, your outfit possibilities are as limitless as your style aspirations. Scroll on to see and shop my selection of the best affordable basics on the market right now.

Monikh Dale wears a ribbed vest top from Reiss.

I love wearing my racer vests under relaxed shirts.

This COS style completely covers my bra straps.

This taupe shade looks so premium (especially when worn with navy).

Marisa Martins wears a pair of tailored trousers from COS.

COS has some of the best tailored trousers on the market.

I have a feeling this pair will fly.

I love the simplicity of this pair—no buttons or clasps, just minimalism.

Emily Wells carries a shoulder bag from Massimo Dutti.

A pared-back shoulder bag such as this one will work with any and every outfit.

Doesn’t this look designer?

Opt for a powdery pastel to give a neutral outfit a lift.

Yatri Pabari wears a blazer from Karen Millen.

The covered buttons make this blazer look even more elevated.

Simple and to the point.

I don’t own a grey blazer, but I can certain make room on my rail for this H&M style.

Lois Sterling wears jeans from & Other Stories.

I keep seeing influencers wearing this & Other Stories relaxed-fit jean.

These strides come in an extended size range.

I spy a new cult M&S jean.

Sylvie Mus wears a jumper from Mango.

I have this on order and can’t wait to wear it with the white skirt I’ve been living in lately to transition it to autumn.

This knit also comes in cardigan form.

You can’t go wrong with a classic Breton stripe.

Liv Madeline wears a shirt from Marks & Spencer.

A no-brainer add-to-basket.

My Arket shirt gets all the wear but still looks incredibly crisp.

Such a great fit.

Tamara Mory wears a pair of loafers from Reformation.

These classic loafers also come in burgundy but, sticking to basics, I’d recommend investing in the black first and foremost.

These flew off the shelves when they first launched, so you better believe I’ve pre-ordered.

PSA: These also come in a warm beige colourway.
