For as long as I can remember, I’ve been an avid list writer. I pen everything, from my wants and desires to daily pursuits and nonsensical rambles on my notes page. The same sentiment has trickled into my fashion buying process. For August, like most seasons I carry out an inventory or shopping guide. I access the gaps in my wardrobe, jot down my most coveted pieces and unearth clothes from storage, ahead of the upcoming season.
I’m a conscious shopper, which can be quite nuanced when writing about fashion. One of the perks of my job is accessing the comings and goings of trends. Although I’m fortunate to bear witness to some stunning releases, it’s made me even more discerning about new purchases. Some years ago, I made a vow that I’d only invest in pieces I know I’ll wear forever, so shopping is a careful, considered, and ruthless process of what I’m likely to wear in 5-10 years and beyond.
Not only is August my birthday month, but it’s also a special time of year as the junction signifies the melting point of the seasons. It’s where the weather is most pleasant, but autumn feels like it’s just on the horizon and Christmas is a quiet hum in the background.
My favourite pieces in August tend to be dresses, preferably with a puff sleeve, which has become an essential part of my uniform. Midi dresses are my most worn style throughout the year. Dôen in particular execute the whimsical cottagecore aesthetic, that best describes my style. However, I’ve also been intrigued by the new shapes available this season, as they have a timeless appeal—from bandeau silhouettes to sculpting shirred panel waists on dresses and extended lines.
A worthwhile mention is accessories and my have we been spoilt. For the first time in a while, I’m excited about the intriguing shapes and textures on offer. Organic-shaped jewels have taken preference, dented studs with dangling pearls are becoming highly sought-after and belts that were once lacklustre are now a star feature on outfits.
I’ve also fallen for the sunken hobo bag that was made famous in the early 2000s and the soft curvature that fits perfectly in the nook of the underarm. Oh, and slip-on mules for the comfort factor and of course, Parisian appeal.
Suffice to say, it seems August is my season in many ways than one. Here are 34 of the pieces that I feel most excited about ahead of August. If like me, you’re obsessed with girly styles use this as your very own shopping guide for August.
