These Are the Best Shoes to Wear With Wide-Leg Trousers, Hands Down

Annemiek proves wide-leg trousers and trainers are a winning combo.

After being launched into the limelight in early 2022, it feels as though wide-leg trousers have dominated the majority of Instagram and street-style looks over the past year. It’s not surprising, really; This relaxed silhouette is not only exceedingly comfortable, but it also works with an impressive number of wardrobe staples. Oversized knitwear? You bet. Camel trench coat? Très chic.

Not to mention the various shoe options that go with wide-leg trousers. Heels, platforms, slides—you name it, it works. That being said, we think this trend works particularly well with trainers. There’s something about the juxtaposition between smart tailored pants and casual sneakers that strikes a pleasing balance. Together, they create a laid-back look that’s appropriate for all manner of everyday activities. I’d just as soon wear this combo to run errands as I would for Sunday brunch with friends.

To prove the versatility of this pairing, I’ve created four very different wide-leg-trouser-and-trainer outfits that I think everyone could get on board with. They all have two things in common, but I think you’ll agree that each of these ensembles is unique in its own way. So, even if you were forced to wear wide-leg trousers and trainers every day (let’s face it, there are worse fates), you certainly wouldn’t get bored fast. Style Notes: My default is always to feature black heavily in an outfit, so for this look, I wanted to work with different neutrals (minus the belt—I can’t help myself) to create a more spring-friendly palette. By opting for light-coloured trousers and sneakers, you can treat this combination as merely the foundation of your outfit and build a colour story around it.

I have my eye on this entire set.

I wear the black version of these on a weekly basis, so I can vouch for them.

This bestselling accessory is finally back in stock in all sizes.

Part of & Other Stories’ sterling silver collection, these hoops will last longer than most pairs on the high street.

We rate this brand’s designer-looking handbags really highly.

The Chuck 70 shape is a fresher take on classic Converse.

Style Notes: There’s not an outfit in the world a trench coat won’t make infinitely better, but the proportions work especially well with a pair of loose-fitting trousers. A pop of colour and a hint of gold ties things together nicely, finishing off this sleek everyday ensemble.

This basic also comes in black and lime green.

Navy feels like a softer alternative to black for spring. These are an investment, but are also classics you’ll love and wear forever.

COS’ trench coats sell out every season.

Some pieces are worth splurging on. Case in point.

A fun spring/summer accessory.

You won’t run out of ways to wear these versatile kicks.

Style Notes: Picnics in the park, we’re ready for you. The wide-leg trend extends to denim, and it’s just waiting to be styled with crochet tops and raffia handbags. We might be getting a little ahead of ourselves, but who can blame us?

Crochet fabrications are set to be everywhere this season.

If you’re not sure about low-rise denim, Mango also has some great high-waist, wide-leg jeans.

Influencers love this bag.

Retro sunnies are my kryptonite.

That’s how you do subtle branding.

Style Notes: This time of year is all about ditching the moody hues and stepping out in spirit-lifting clothing. And what’s more cheerful than top-to-toe pink? Don’t stop at wide-leg trousers—find a matching blazer to complete the set. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Suiting works surprisingly well with sneakers.

This suit is a dreamy option for summer weddings.

These trousers could be designer.

Comfortable, stylish and eco-friendly. What’s not to like?

This cult buy comes in several sizes and shades.

I’d layer this beaded necklace with silver chains.
