Auger-Aliassime defeats Kecmanovic, Canada advances to Davis Cup knockout stage

Felix Auger-Aliassime took care of business on Saturday, defeating Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in two sets (6-3, 6-4) and pushing Canada through to the Davis Cup knockout stage.

Kecmanovic, currently ranked 33rd in the world, was previously 2-0 against the No. 13 Auger-Aliassime.

The result comes just a day after Auger-Aliassime beat world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, before joining countryman Vasek Pospisil for a doubles win to secure a Canadian victory over hosts Spain.

“I had one of my biggest wins of the year, of course, yesterday, and to back it up with a win like this is very important for me,” the Montreal native said following Saturday’s match.

“I find my best performances are when I’m playing for the flag.”

Canada began the day with a loss, as 20-year-old Gabriel Diallo fell to Laslo Djere in straight sets.

But with Auger-Aliassime’s win, Canada tied Serbia at 1-1 in the group stage tilt, and that was enough to clinch regardless of what happens in the upcoming doubles match thanks to Canada’s victory over Spain.

The knockout stage takes place in Malaga, Spain, this November.
