Canadiens trade Ben Chiarot to Panthers for prospect, first-round pick

The Florida Panthers have acquired defenceman Ben Chiarot from the Montreal Canadiens for prospect Tyler Smilanic, their first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, and a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Ty Smilanic was selected in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft and has 22 points in 38 games with Quinnipiac University.

Montreal held Chiarot out of the lineup Tuesday against the Arizona Coyotes in a decision made by management with the trade deadline looming.

Chiarot, who is on an expiring contract, has been connected in trade talks for multiple weeks now. He has 18 points and 42 penalty minutes in 54 games this season, while averaging a career-high 23:33 in ice time.

The Panthers cleared over $2.5 million in cap space earlier in the day after trading forward Frank Vatrano to the New York Rangers for a 2022 fourth-round pick which was used as part of the package for Chiarot.
