Checkmate: Oilers eliminate Kings again, this time in five games

The Edmonton Oilers have dispatched the Los Angeles Kings and advanced to Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third straight season.

With a 4-3 win over the Kings in Game 5 of their first-round series, the Oilers now move on to face the winner of the series between the Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators.

Vancouver currently leads 3-2 with Game 6 set for Friday in Nashville.

The Oilers are the fifth team to advance and the first from Canada to do so.

Edmonton defenceman Evan Bouchard recorded three assists in Wednesday’s win, forward Leon Draisaitl tallied two goals and goaltender Stuart Skinner stood tall in net.

The Oilers have now advanced past the Kings in Round 1 of the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. They did it in six games last season and seven games the season prior.
