Chic Women in Their Late 30s Are Ditching Flip-Flops for This French Shoe Trend This Autumn

After making a flirty cameo on the bridge of her boyfriend Role Model’s new single, Dakota Johnson has stepped out for a girls’ night in Los Angeles. Accompanied by Marty Supreme breakout star Odessa A’zion, the star arrived at the Hollywood Bowl looking incredibly ready for autumn’s arrival.

Indeed, just as members of the celebrity style set descend on the chicest European destinations to soak in the last of summer’s rays—see: Jennifer Aniston in Mallorca, Dua Lipa in Italy and Victoria Beckham in Ibiza—the Materialist actor has chosen to stay at home to prepare her wardrobe for the months ahead.

Though Johnson often reaches for classic pieces with a sensual edge, her latest look features major trends that will be everywhere come September, proving that a well-edited wardrobe will always be cutting-edge. This is, of course, a symptom of fashion’s cyclical nature, with those who invest wisely being well-stocked with essentials that can not only suit each season, but also set the agenda for the styles and silhouettes the rest of us will be coveting.

For the occasion, Johnson wore a crisp apple green-coloured slip dress accented with cream lace trim that dates back a century to the 1920s and was sourced from eBay. (Quite literally a timeless sartorial choice.)

Leaning into this archival sensibility, she paired the boudoir-coded midi with a vintage Celine suede jacket from the French maison’s spring/summer 2002 collection. The jacket featured a collarless detail and was punctuated by broderie anglaise eyelets.

Completing the look, she tied it all together with a pair of Parisian-inspired ballet flats from Phoebe Philo and the Valentino Nellcôte shopping bag, which was finished with a floral jacquard fabric that looked like something you’d find in a 17th-century château.

Though the Shaggy-from-Scooby-Doo-inspired colour combination might seem like an obvious choice to wear as the weather turns cooler, all indicators point to the fact this exact outfit formula will be everywhere by September. So, instead of shopping for that last-minute heatwave dress or another pair of sandals, make like those with taste and stock up on these autumn basics, as approved by Dakota Johnson.
