Five Canadian stories to watch on Day 2 at the Beijing Olympics

After earning two medals on the opening day of competition, Canada hopes to keep the good times rolling on Day 2 at the Beijing Olympics.

Here are five Canadian storylines to watch on the second day of action.

Editor’s note: All times are Sunday unless otherwise noted.

Laurie Blouin
Women’s snowboard slopestyle final, 8:30 p.m. (Saturday)
The Quebec City snowboarder captured silver in this event at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics. She was seventh in qualifying on Day 1, earning one of 12 spots in the final.

Jack Crawford
Men’s alpine ski downhill, 10 p.m. (Saturday)
The Toronto native was fifth in the first training run on a course unfamiliar to most racers. The top four skiers all missed a gate, so you can argue Crawford had the best run. Crawford had fifth and sixth-place finishes on the World Cup circuit last month.

Max Parrot
Men’s snowboard slopestyle qualification, 11:30 p.m. (Saturday)
Since capturing silver in this event at PyeongChang 2018, Parrot has won a battle with cancer. Parrot and fellow Canadian Mark McMorris, the 2018 bronze medallist, both will attempt to return to the podium.

Ted-Jan Bloemen
Men’s speedskating 5,000 metres, 3:30 a.m.
The Calgary skater won silver in this event four years ago at the Winter Games. Bloemen has two World Cup medals at this distance in the 2021-22 campaign.

Justine Dufour-Lapointe
Women’s moguls final, 6:30 a.m.
The Montreal native nailed down the last qualification spot in the final in the first of two qualifiers. She won gold in Sochi in 2014 and silver in PyeongChang in 2018.
