I Have Expensive Taste But a Tight Budget—26 High Street Buys I Approve Of

The high street is where I do the majority of my shopping, so I’m always excited when I’m given the opportunity to cherrypick the best of the best to share with you. Fast fashion can often be branded as “cheap”, while others argue it encourages disposable shopping habits but I truly believe that, with a discerning eye and the utmost consideration, you can find pieces you’ll love, go the distance in terms of quality, and will never date, all wrapped up on our Great British high street.

As such, below, I’ve honed an edit of what I consider to be the best high street items of 2023, all of which deliver in terms of timelessness. Casual yet polished, these are pieces I know I’ll get the wear of, not just this year, but for many more to come. Whether you buy your clothes from H&M or The Row, this should ultimately be the deciding factor in any purchase you make and will guide you to making more sustainable shopping decisions, whatever your budget may be.

From wear-anywhere dresses to skirts you can style a multitude of ways, tailoring that looks more premium than its price tag and shoes you’ll reach for time and time again, scroll on to see this fashion editor’s wish list of the best high street items of 2023.

Full skirts are trending this season—take all the effort out of styling them with this vest-hybrid dress.

This faultless blazer comes in a range of chic colours, my favourite being the camel hue.

It might go past the three-figure mark, but I genuinely think this COS bag rivals any designer option.

A fresh take on denim.

From city to beach, this dress will serve you well for the season ahead.

Nothing says spring/summer quite like vibrant shades of green.

Minimal strappy sandals are going to be the next big time.

Pop these on and every outfit you wear them with will look more premium.

I can think of so many ways I’d style this midi.

The perfect spring/summer layer.

If you live in jeans, this is the nice top to pair with them.

I’m here for this cargo/linen trouser crossover.

This skirt will look just as good paired with a white vest top and slider sandals as it does the matching blazer.

This bag is high up on my wish list.

As is this crochet dress. Just beautiful.

I’ll wear this with jeans and loafers now, then the matching shorts come July.

A striped knit is always a good idea (especially in Britian).

This was in my basket faster than you could say “holiday”.

PSA: M&S has just created the perfect denim midi skirt.

So chic.

Want to make our outfits look more expensive? Add this string of pearls.

Can you tell I have a thing for linen?

I have two dresses this summer, and I intend on wearing this to both (with the above Zara earrings).

I just know these designer-looking heels are going to fly.

You’ll come to rely on this just as much as leggings or jeans.

& Other Stories always delivers on tailoring.
