Islanders fire head coach Barry Trotz

The New York Islanders fired head coach Barry Trotz on Monday.

The decision comes after the Islanders missed the playoffs, finishing fifth in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 37-35-10.

Trotz was hired by the Islanders in June 2018 after resigning as head coach of the Washington Capitals following a contract dispute in the aftermath of the team’s Stanley Cup victory.

The Winnipeg native won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year for the second time after his first year with the Islanders as New York advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

Trotz then guided the Islanders to the third round the next two years before missing the playoffs this season.

It marked the first time he had missed the playoffs since 2014 in Washington.
