As someone who’s worked in beauty for over five years, I take a bit of pride in the amount of knowledge I’ve developed across all things hair, nails, makeup, and skincare. You name it, I’ve probably covered it. I’ve also spent countless hours interviewing industry experts and learning about the latest launches. Prior to my career, though, there were some topics that I had limited knowledge on. One example: heat tools.
From my preteen years through college, I would religiously straighten my curly hair. But outside of my salon appointments, I wasn’t using heat on my hair—I always air-dried it. So needless to say, I was genuinely floored when I learned that I could use a diffuser to dry my curls without messing with my natural pattern.
In my early 20s, I decided to stop straightening my hair altogether, but I still limited how much heat I used. To be fair, I spent so many years damaging my hair that now I only use a diffuser on my hair when I go in for my curly cuts. Outside of that, I’m always air-drying my hair, which means using the right products to get the best results is crucial for me. Although I have my own top picks that I’m willing to share, I also wanted to know which products the best hairstylists in the biz loved too. Curious to know what they had to say? See their insights ahead.
Best Mousse: The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam Curl Enhance

For a budget-friendly styling product that enhances hair, consider this option from The Doux. “For added definition and hold, especially for waves, curls, and coils, the Def Texture Foam is a great styling step,” says celebrity hairstylist Kee Taylor. “It helps enhance natural texture, add lightweight volume, and create soft, touchable definition without leaving hair stiff or crunchy.”
Pro: Delivers hold, lightweight, leaves hair soft
Con: Not enough hold for very coarse or textured hair if used alone
Formula: Styling foam
Key ingredients: Silk protein, aloe vera, hydrolyzed wheat protein
Size: 7 oz.
Customer review: “Pump is more earth friendly than pressurized versions which is nice. Smells good, has a gentle hold on wet hair and medium hold on damp hair. I have thin, wavy-to-curly shoulder length hair and this lasts a couple days and brushes out nicely.”
Best Gel: Pattern by Tracee Ellis Ross Curl Gel Crème

I’ve been testing this gel for a month now and love everything from the smell to the texture. It keeps my curls looking defined and shiny throughout the day thanks to the aloe, coconut oil, and cacay oil. I like to break the cast with a mist or oil like OGX’s Renewing + Argan Oil of Morocco.
Pro: Defines curls, long-lasting hold, reduce frizz
Con: Cast needs to be broken with an oil
Formula: Gel
Key ingredients: Aloe vera, coconut oil, cacay oil
Size: 9.8 oz.
Customer review: “This curl gel is the best! It is super good for slicking back hair and making sure you have no fit aways all day! I love using this on wet hair or dry hair to make my curls bouncy and stick together without getting crunchy, it’s great!”
Best Spray: R+Co Rockaway Salt Spray

This may be on the pricier side, but trust that it’s worth it. “R+Co makes a Rockaway leave-in salt spray, also great for activating curls and waves, but really for giving texture and body to fine, straight, or limp hair—like emerging from the ocean with the best texture and body ever,” says hairstylist Jackson Simmonds. “Tousle this into towel-dried hair, and leave it alone.”
Pro: Creates texture and volume
Con: Not ideal for dry hair
Formula: Salt spray
Key ingredients: Vitamin C, geranium extract, sage leaf extract
Size: 4.2 oz.
Customer review: “This is my new favorite salt spray!!! Not only does it smell amazing, but it doesn’t leave my hair feeling crunchy and dry. It gives just the right amount of texture.”
Best Anti-Frizz Cream: Ouai Anti-Frizz Hair Styling Cream

This recommendation comes from senior beauty editor Jamie Chevron, who says she uses this styling cream every washday. This formula performs best of straight and wavy hair with the help of key ingredients like upcycled jackfruit, beetroot extract, and plant-based polymer. The result? Smooth strands, humidity protection, and more shine.
Pro: Smooths frizz, enhances shine, non-greasy finish
Con: More product may be needed for thicker hair
Formula: Styling cream
Key ingredients: Upcycled jackfruit, beetroot extract, plant-based polymer
Size: 6 oz.
Customer review: “Love this for smoothing down frizzy hair (type 2A/B). My hair is fine so a lot of creams weigh it down but this doesn’t!”
Best Budget: Odele Air Dry Styler for Light Moisture, Definition + Shine

Beauty editor Kaitlyn McLintock and associate beauty editor Alyssa Brascia cosign this product as a standout in their routines. It’s extremely budget-friendly, costing less than $10, and it provides stellar results. You’ll get shine and lightweight definition that never weighs hair down.
Pro: Lightweight, provides definition, controls frizz
Con: Too much product can cause crunchiness
Formula: Lightweight styling gel
Key ingredients: Amaranth seed extract, hydrolyzed rice protein
Size: 6 oz.
Customer review: “I let my hair air dry which meant I used to walk around with frizzy hair and flyaways. Then, I bought this product, and now my hair lays flat and stays shiny throughout the day.”
Best Multipurpose: Brazil Edition Leave in Hair Treatment

If this brand isn’t already on your radar, consider this your official introduction. “I’ve been on a wavy-hair journey and been using the Brazil Edition leave-in treatment after the shower to help define and smooth my texture, and it’s been fabulous,” says Brascia. This formula repairs damage, protects against breakage, and reduces frizz.
Pro: Repairs visible damage, tackles frizz
Con: Rich formula may feel too heavy for fine or low-density hair
Formula: Leave-in treatment
Key ingredients: Biomimetic peptides, plant proteins, amino acids
Size: 3.4 oz.
Customer review: “I’m amazed by this product! The quality is outstanding — you can really feel the difference. My hair has become incredibly soft and looks healthier than ever, with a beautiful shine. I’ve even had people ask me what I’ve done to my hair because it looks so good!”
Best Anti-frizz Gel: Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Heat & Humidity Anti-Frizz Strong Hold Gel

“For textured hair, applying a styling product while the hair is still damp is key,” says Taylor. “The Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Heat & Humidity Extra Hold Gel is a great option because it helps lock in moisture, control frizz, and define natural texture as the hair dries.” She adds that the formula creates a flexible hold that keeps curls and waves looking polished without feeling stiff or crunchy.
Pro: Provides humidity-resistant, enhances curl definition
Con: Can weigh down finer hair
Formula: Gel
Key ingredients: Sericin, wheat protein, soy protein, ceramides
Size: 8.5 oz.
Customer review: “This worked really well on my curls. Love the value for the products quality. It smells good too! The stronger hold made the product last through out the day and protected my hair from humidity.”
Is air drying better than heat drying?
The jury is still out on this debate. On one hand, leaving hair wet for a prolonged period can cause it to lose elasticity, making it prone to breakage. At the same time, Simmonds points out that air drying carries zero risk of heat damage. “The best way to air dry successfully is by understanding which products and in which order they need to be layered,” he says. “To avoid frizz, once you’ve set it, keep it hands off.”
