Katie Holmes Just Wore the Simple Autumn Outfit We're Rushing to Recreate

It was only yesterday (literally, yesterday!) that we were extolling the excellence of Katie Holmes’s autumn wardrobe. She is a woman who prioritises comfort but always manages to combine it with a dash of cool—a well chosen shoe here, a unique jumper there. In fact, her work towards the promotion of the global knitwear trade should be commended. Especially considering that when she first kickstarted the bra-digan trend with a double camel cashmere number from Khaite it was 2019 and the look is still at every store today at a variety of price points over three years later. Now that’s influence.

Her recent ensemble for a Chanel event in New York City is yet another shining example of her autumn outfit-building prowess, and everyone in the team at Who What Wear UK is in agreement: this is precisely how we want to dress right now. Her approach to each look is casual, and yet once again there is something special in the mix. The Austrian-inspired vintage-look oversized cardi is the real star of the show, but her layered white tank maintains one foot in summer, the wide-leg jeans feel more current than skinnies or straight-legs, a metallic bag adds a little elevation, and the ballet pumps add a busy-woman-on-the-go vibe we can all appreciate.

Katie’s cardigan is, of course, not vintage, but £4850 worth of Chanel’s finest cashmere and wool, debuted first on the autumn/winter 2022 runway belted over a miniskirt. The piece is indicative of a wider knitwear trend we’ve seen bubbling up at other designer brands such as Gucci or Miu Miu, an oversized “grandma” style cardigan complete with kitsch intarsia patterns, roomy pockets and cute buttons. It’s the kind of item that can be worn many ways throughout the season, something we’re sure Holmes will do. Keep scrolling to see her look and shop it.

On Katie Holmes: Chanel cardigan and bag

For a subtle way to tap into the look, opt for a flecked knit rather than a patterned one.

Double the wear, double the fun!

Detailed and unusual, this will look great with black layers and denim.

I am lucky enough to own a Hayley Menzies cardigan and love pulling it out every autumn and spring.

A strong option for the monochrome-loving minimalists out there.

A more abstract and hippy version.

This is kind of retro Austrian look I’m talking about.

Alanui is the ultimate luxury option for patterned knits.

True vintage vibes.

The colour mix on this one is just delightful.

If you’re looking for something with a preppy slant.

You didn’t think Mango would skip the trend, did you?

Great with jeans or leather trousers.

The kind of intricately-made piece that will always turn heads.

Artisanal knits are clearly going to have a moment this winter. Up next, the most expensive-looking high street pieces.
