Lucy Boynton On Her Evolving Relationship With Beauty and the Products She Loves

Say hello to Unfiltered, a fresh, new beauty series where you’ll get an exclusive glimpse into the dressed-down beauty routines of our favourite celebrities. They’ll reveal their guilty-pleasure beauty practises, the five-minute-routine product lineup they can’t live without, the one good-skin tip they’ll be forever thankful for and so much more. To bring every conversation full circle, we ask each celebrity to send us a selection of self-shot, filter-free photos of their choosing to capture the essence of their Unfiltered beauty philosophy.

Up next, we’re talking to the wonderful Lucy Boynton who is renowned for her starring roles in blockbuster Bohemian Rhapsody and Netlifx’s The Politician and was recently named the face of Chloe’s new autumn scent Eau de Parfum Naturelle. Ahead, she’s answering all of our skincare and fragrance questions. Enjoy!

How would you describe your relationship with beauty?

Evolving.

If you had to leave the house in five minutes, what products would you use?

A Chantecaille concealer (£46) and tinted moisturiser (£72), a lip tint that I can use as a flush of colour on my cheeks—Chanel Rouge Allure Liquid Powder (£33) is great for this—mascara, of which I’m currently into an electric blue one, and I’d run a bit of R+Co Tinsel Smoothing Oil (£24) through the ends of my hair. And done!

Can you talk us through your everyday skincare routine?

It’s fairly simple. I cleanse twice a day with a Weleda or Dr Hauschka cleanser, then apply Skinceuticals B5 Serum (£68), then a Weleda moisturiser—usually the rose one (£25) for daytime and Skin Food (£13) at night. I probably experiment with a few more products at night…I love a Chantecaille face mask.

Are you a bath or shower person? If we looked in your bath or shower right now, what products would we find?

When I’m trying to wind down, I’m a bath person. Other than the obvious shampoos, you would find Olaplex products, and when I’m blonde some Christophe Robin Back To Baby Blonde hair masks (£15). In an ideal world, Epsom salts and some Le Labo candles would also be there.

Let’s talk fragrance—what’s your signature scent?

Chloe Eau de Parfum Naturelle (£55).

How would you describe the fragrance and what do you love most about it?

It’s beautifully fresh and crisp and slightly woody, it’s elegant and you feel immediately put together wearing it. I love that it lasts too—I think that’s a top priority in a perfume for me.

Scent is so intrinsically tied to our memories, are there any perfumes that are particularly nostalgic to you?

I love when a specific fragrance is tied to a person. My best friend Ellie always has a signature scent, so I love picking up on that in unexpected places when I’m away and missing her. Also, I recently rediscovered a bottle of Britney Spears Fantasy perfume (£40)—iconic—which was the first perfume my sister used that I’d steal, so that took me right back.

Has anything about your approach to beauty changed over the last year and are there any particular makeup looks that you’re looking forward to trying once we’re out of lockdown?

Honestly. anything [makeup artist] Jo Baker throws at me! In the last year my approach prioritised health over decoration—obviously—so I’m ready to get creative again.

You must spend a fair amount of time on set with makeup artists and hair stylists, are there any insider beauty secrets that you’ve picked up from the experts?

Hydrated skin seems to be the key to everything… oh, and also that Kevyn Aucoin mascara (£22) never smudges.

Wellness and beauty are so intertwined—do you have any wellness practices or supplements that help to give you a boost both mentally and physically?

Water and vitamin D. Boring, but true!

Finally, what’s your Unfiltered beauty philosophy in seven words or less?

Beauty comes from within, so you’re only as pretty as the way you treat people. Sorry, I know that’s double the length you asked for! I also genuinely think I read this on a t-shirt recently…but it resonates.
