Malkin signs four-year, $24.4 million contract extension with Penguins

Three-time Stanley Cup-winning centre Evgeni Malkin has signed a four-year, $24.4 million contract extension to return with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Malkin’s contract carries a $6.1 million cap hit.

The 35-year-old is coming off an eight-year contract that saw him earn $9.5 million annually.

Malkin has 1,146 points in 981 career regular-season games, plus another 180 points in 177 playoff games.

Injuries have been an issue for Malkin the past three seasons, with him averaging just 43 games during that time. He had 42 points in 41 games this past season.

During his career, the native of Magnitogorsk, Russia has also won the Calder (rookie of the year), Hart (MVP), Ted Lindsay (outstanding player, as voted by players), Art Ross (most points) twice, and Conn Smythe as the playoff MVP.
