Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews misses third period in Game 4

It just keeps going from bad to worse for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Down by multiple goals at home in Game 4 and trailing in the first-round series, leading scorer and Rocket Richard Trophy winner Auston Matthews did not return for the third period against the Boston Bruins. The team later announced he was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

According to head coach Sheldon Keefe prior to Saturday’s game, Matthews has been recovering from an illness that forced him to take maintenance days, but he was able to play in Game 4.

Matthews had 14:16 of ice time across the first two periods.

The Maple Leafs lost the game 3-1 and now trail the series by the same margin. Game 5 in Boston is set for Tuesday night.
