Maple Leafs place Mitch Marner, Rasmus Sandin on injured reserve

TORONTO – The injury bug has bit the Toronto Maple Leafs hard.

Mitch Marner and Rasmus Sandin were both added to the injured reserve list Tuesday morning, suggesting they will miss some time.

Marner suffered an undisclosed injury Friday when he collided with teammate Jake Muzzin in practice. Although he traveled with the club on its weekend back-to-back in Minnesota and Winnipeg, he did not play nor skate with the team.

At the time, coach Sheldon Keefe said keeping Marner off the ice as a precautionary measure

Sandin was the victim of a direct knee-on-knee hit from Winnipeg defenceman Neal Pionk in Sunday’s loss and needed help off the ice.

Pionk went unpenalized on the play but was suspended two games for his actions.

Toronto’s Jason Spezza delivered a retaliatory headshot to Pionk later in the game and faces an in-person hearing Tuesday.

Defenceman Travis Dermott was absent from the team’s morning skate putting his status for Tuesday’s game versus the Columbus Blue Jackets in doubt.

The Maple Leafs recalled defenceman Alex Biega, defenceman Kristiāns Rubīns and forward Alex Steeves from the Toronto Marlies.

The Leafs also loaned forward Joey Anderson back to the AHL.
