Mets owner upset with Steven Matz’s agent over contract negotiations

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has voiced his frustration over conduct displayed by pitcher Steven Matz‘s camp during contract negotiations.

Cohen took to Twitter Wednesday morning claiming they did not stay true to their promise.

Speaking to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Cohen said that Matz and his agent reached out to the team saying that the Mets were his first choice as he had unfinished business with the team.

“Most relationships I have had with agents have been wonderful. The conversations have been good, they really have been. But here this was different. This was something so over the line,” Cohen said. “I can’t imagine what the agent was thinking in the context of how they reached out to us and the reasons they wanted to come back. I have ever had an agent do that before with me.”

The comments come after Matz agreed to a four-year, $44-million dollar deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Martin declined to comment on the situation after getting contacted by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Matz played the first six years of his career with the Mets going 31-41 with a 4.35 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 552 strikeouts over 107 starts.
