No Doubt—M&S Has the Only Coats, Boots and Jumpers We Want to Wear This Autumn

After officially saying goodbye to summer and navigating the tricky transitional months, we’re happy to say that we finally have a solution to the age-old question, “What should I wear in autumn?” and the answer is surprisingly simple.

It’s in the colder months that high-street brand Marks and Spencer really comes into its own, and if anyone knows British style, it’s the people at M&S who have been outfitting us for decades, and leaning into the cooler climes is their speciality. Sure, we stocked up on plenty of their summer dresses and swimwear during holiday season (and in fact, one of their sell-out successes was a pair of summer sandals we’ve relied on for the last two years), but the proof of their cold-weather expertise is in the proverbial pudding, where the main ingredients are timeless coats, boots and jumpers.

Whenever we find ourselves lacking in cosy knits or realise we could do with investing in new boots, Marks and Spencer is the first place we turn. Continuing to build on its well-curated edit of modern workwear, versatile separates and statement knitwear and outerwear, this season, M&S also is offering brand-new silhouettes, reworked classics and some must-see dress-up moments to help you celebrate in style over the party season.

With consistent sizing (something that’s becoming infuriatingly unreliable on the high street) and a level of quality that, more often than not, surpasses its price tags, M&S purchases are always worth it. And right now, M&S’s coat, boot, jumper and party offerings are so impressive it only seems right to share them with you and give the brand its well-deserved dues.

Whether you’re heading out on the commute, meeting friends or spending the weekend hibernating, reach for cosy, cheerful knits that are guaranteed to put a little extra pep in your step. Think premium cashmere jumpers and chunky wool cardigans that will become wardrobe staples for many years to come.

It’s hard to find premium-looking red tones, but M&S has nailed it with this V-neck.

You just can’t go wrong with a ribbed knit and a balloon sleeve.

An expensive-looking shade of green.

A great layering piece—I wear my knitted tanks over long-sleeve T-shirts and pie-crust blouses.

Striped knitwear never dates.

The rollover neckline will be so cosy to wear.

A fun take on black-and-white knitwear.

An easy way to add some playful brights to your autumn wardrobe.

Wrap up and head out in the best shearling, tailoring and quilted coats on the market. There’s no better way to battle against the cold than a coat that looks (and feels) quite as good as these.

Wear this coat with flared jeans and retro trainers.

This shearling-trimmed biker will keep you extra toasty. Oh, and it also comes in khaki green.

Everything about this decadent, cloud-soft coat looks so luxurious.

Greige—a combination of grey and beige—is the perfect neutral and will go with so many pieces you already own.

M&S always delivers on affordable camel coats.

Quilted styles are still going strong.

Borg textures are one of the biggest coat trends this season.

I love this woollen take on the trench coat; so sleek.

Coats with hoods are always sound investments.

The collarless labels give this coat a streamlined finish that will work in even the most minimalist wardrobes.

So long, sandals. We’ll be wearing boots for the foreseeable, and whether you’re looking for a dressy heel, a chunky Chelsea or something a little cosier, there’s guaranteed to be a boot for you.

These will swiftly become my weekend go-tos.

These also come in a pretty beige hue.

With a clever anti-satining finish, these suede booties will look fresher for longer.

Platform boots were all over the autumn 2022 runways.

The ultimate evening boots—just add your favourite midi dress.

The soft fabric around the ankle will make these so much easier to pull on than more rigid styles.

Square toes on boots feel so current.

Shine on in the shimmering sequins, soft velvets and fluid tailoring that comes into its own once the sun sets. Night owls and dancing queens, this is your time to dress to the nines and embrace your inner exhibitionist, as this is eveningwear that commands attention and invites compliments.

Just look at this light-catching sequin dress. Nothing says “party” like head-to-toe sparkle.

If sequins aren’t your thing, try seasonal velvet in an unexpected statement shade.

Is there any better evening pairing than a well-tailored jumpsuit and a pair of metallic platforms? Because if there is, we’re yet to find it.

Whether you’re a sparkle-loving maximalist or simply a trouser devotee, a high-neck sequin top with a pair of wide-leg trousers is the refined way to make simple tailoring feel party ready.

Thanks to M&S’s Insolia padding, these platforms are shoes you truly can dance the night away in.

Marks & Spencer’s 2022 advent calendar is £40 (originally £300) when you spend £30 on clothing and home.
