Not All Jackets Are Created Equal—These 7 Are Truly Exceptional

Whether you’re ready for it or not, autumn is almost here (heck, some days, it feels like it already is), which can only mean one thing: It’s time to start thinking about jackets.

You can keep your pumpkin spiced lattes and your opaque tights—jackets are easily my favourite thing about autumn. While I already have a few trusty styles to hand that I pull out every single year, it’s been a while since I treated myself to a new jacket, so right now, I’m officially in the market for some on-trend outerwear. This, however, isn’t a purchase I’ll make lightly. This jacket will have to carry me through the foreseeable future and go with everything I already own to make it worthwhile and justifiable. I’m not asking for much, right?

Finding such a jacket requires extensive research—browsing new-in section after new-in section. Needless to say, I take shopping very seriously. And it was during these cyber travels that I realised there were seven types of jackets that kept cropping up.

From truly classic jackets making a comeback to small updates that make a big difference, I have a feeling these autumn jackets are going to define the season ahead. With styles to suit minimal aesthetics and those with an enduring penchant for cottagecore, scroll on to see the best autumn jackets.

Style Notes: An offshoot from the ’90s, the leather blazer has since proven itself to be a perennial jacket option. Last year, Arket’s oversized iteration sold out in a matter of days, but fret not, for in 2021, there are significantly more options to shop in both real and faux fabrications.

Style Notes: If you feel the chill like I do, then you absolutely need a borg jacket in your autumn arsenal. You can find great second-hand and vintage styles if you look hard enough, but this black AllSaints number is the one that’s caught my eye this season.

Style Notes: Isn’t it incredible how a small update can make all the difference? To me, belted jackets always look more expensive, whether you opt for a blazer, shacket or shell shape.

Style Notes: Having stuck around since they hit the big time in 2019, shackets continue to be the thrown-on cover-up of choice of the fashion elite. This season, I’ve noticed more and more knee-grazing lengths are coming through, which are the perfect jacket-coat hybrid.

Style Notes: There’s a jacket trend following me on Instagram, and admittedly, it’s one I never thought I’d like as much as I do. Quilted patchwork jackets are very much a thing in style circles, for which we have Sea New York to thank. Although its styles have swiftly sold out, there are plenty of other patchwork jackets to choose from.

Style Notes: Chances are you already own a denim jacket, but do you own a pretty denim jacket? The casual staple has been given a fanciful update with the addition of collars, ruffles, puff-sleeves, peplum hems and even pearls. Despite my best efforts to resist, I want to collect them all.

Style Notes: Bouclé is a trend that tends to flow in and out of popularity in the fashion world, but you can always guarantee it’ll make a comeback sooner or later. And this season, it’s already making waves. Right now, stylish types are wearing it in jacket form, complete with low-slung jeans or leggings.
