Oilers’ McDavid makes winning return to lineup at Heritage Classic

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is back — and his team is back in the win column.

Sidelined with an upper-body injury for a week after sustaining the injury against the Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 21, McDavid returned Sunday as the Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 5-2 in the Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium.

“Really happy. Obviously, this is an amazing atmosphere,” McDavid told Sportsnet’s Kyle Bukauskas after registering one assist in the outdoor win. “These only come once or twice in your lifetime and to be able to be out here and enjoy it, it’s just a credit to our amazing staff we have here in Edmonton and just happy to be a part of it.”

The initial timeline for recovery indicated that he would likely miss Sunday’s annual outdoor game, but he progressed quickly and took full practice with the team on Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium.

The Oilers notched a must-needed win to improve to 2-5-1

“Looked like the team that put together 100 wins over the last couple of years,” McDavid said. “I’m not sure what the team was for the first seven games but that looked a little more familiar and something we can repeat game in and game out.”
