Red Bull’s Verstappen claims Canadian Grand Prix over Ferrari’s Sainz

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen went from pole position to victory, winning the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, marking the first time the Dutchman and F1 points leader has won in Montreal.

The win was Verstappen’s sixth of the season and kept him in first place in the drivers’ standings.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz kept it close, racing on Verstappen’s heels for the final 20 laps after the safety car had to come out, but wound up in second. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes finished in third.

The event was marking a return to the Formula One calendar after two years of cancellations due to the global pandemic.

Canadians Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) finished in 10th, while Nicholas Latifi (Williams) was well back in 16th, which was next to last.

More to come.
