The Olsen Twins Were Way Ahead of the Curve on This Coat Trend

Regarded as some of the chicest women in the world, the Olsen twins are hardly a pair who follow the crowd. Over their years in the spotlight, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have developed their own unique aesthetic, rarely straying from a pared-back capsule wardrobe filled with perfectly tailored trousers, button-down shirts, lengthy gowns, and floor-skimming maxi coats

As a fellow petite woman, I have, for years, analysed and admired the way the twins dress, managing to balance proportions and throw the traditional “petite-girl rule book” completely out the window. And this autumn in particular, I am feeling very inclined to draw from the Olsens’ guide to style by trying a maxi coat of my very own.

While a legitimately floor-skimming coat is not the most practical purchase—particularly during the wet winter months—a coat that hits your lower calf can become a wardrobe hero throughout autumn and winter. Luckily this season, there seems to be plenty of options around if you are looking to add a maxi coat to your current rotation.

With an array of hues and shapes, investing in an Olsen-esque coat is all about tailoring and finding a look that won’t entirely overwhelm your frame. From double-breasted iterations to coats that feature waist-cinching belts, opting for a tailored element will help create structure. Keep scrolling to see how the Olsen twins style maxi coats and then shop a few options below.

Style Notes: Seen in their coat style of choice, Ashley chooses to don a cream coat with a waist belt detail here, while Mary-Kate opts for an oversize iteration.

Style Notes: At another event, Ashley wears a double-breasted coat over a long black dress and stilettos.

Style Notes: Here, Mary-Kate adds structure to her maxi coat by pairing it with a statement, waist-cinching belt.
