The One Style of Knitwear I Wear More Than Any Other in Winter

Whether it’s because of our communal craving for all things cosy or a continuation of the comfortably chic cottagecore trend, the cable-knit jumper has fast become a wintry go-to in the wardrobes of some of  fashion’s finest. Offering plenty of hand-spun, artisanal appeal, it’s a knitwear trend that I end up wearing more than any other in the winter months, and not just because it’s one of the easiest ways to add texture to a simple outfit.

Whether I’m rushing out of the door and pull on a knit and jeans, or if I have the leisurely time to dress up a long skirt and knee-high boots, a cable knit jumper is the piece that ties it all together and always manages to look both polished and effortless in a way that only the best knitwear can.

And thanks to their evergreen appeal, whatever your style, there’s a cable-knit look for you. At the top of my wish list are knitted vests, worn with a preppy twist over a shirt or t-shirt and paired with high-waisted jeans. But there’s also the chunky cardigan, a typically conservative piece made all the more cool with a pair of glossy leather trousers and an equally chunky loafer. Or, perhaps you’re a knitwear traditionalist who prefers cosying up in leggings and a slouchy, oversized turtleneck once the winter weather rolls around? It all goes to prove just how versatile the knit can be.

So, if like me this week was the first time you packed an umbrella, turned the heating on, or made sure you had a scarf to hand, keep scrolling to see and shop my cable-knit-jumper edit and prepare to get cosy for the foreseeable.

A classic, cream cable knit doesn’t get better than this.

I already loved this grey cardigan, but it looks even better with a mini skirt and knee-high boots.

Proof that cable knits aren’t always a crew neck jumper, they can be cool layering pieces too.

The whole Who What Wear team love Arket’s classic style.

This jumper manages to combine cable knit detail, a fluffy mohair finish and a supremely good shade of red, making it a strong contender for best designer jumper this month.

Love knitwear but hate simplicity? The layered detail on this & Other Stories sweater makes it feel anything but boring.

Elegant worn alone, but even better worn as the whole co-ord.

My favourite way to wear a zip up jumper? Underneath an oversized blazer and with straight legged jeans. An easy weekend look.

Get cosy in a soft sweater knitted from alpaca wool and wool blend yarns.

Thanks to Uniqlo, I’ll be wearing an oversized shirt under a crew neck on rotation. The only decision is whether to go for the navy, off white, or brick red jumper.

A pop of bold red is the dose of dopamine you’ll need to brighten a cold, grey morning.

Wear with chunky boots and leggings for a cosy weekend look.

The kind of cardigan-meets-jacket that looks just as good unzipped over a simple white tee.

And speaking of good cardigans, the mood-boosting colour and silver buttons give this Ganni cardi an extra special touch.

I vote to replace all Christmas jumpers with this statement knit.

It’s been a good year for S.S. Daley, and its easy to see why the brand has garnered celebrity fans like Harry Styles.

I thought I was over fringing until this jumper convinced me otherwise.

All this needs is a pinstripe shirt and a wide leg trouser and you’ve got an easy work look.

Yes, you can wear knitwear for evening. Just add a satin midi skirt and a mule.

The perfect inky blue to pair with white, black, camel, khaki, pink, red…

I urge you to check out Mr Mittens for some of the cosiest and most contemporary knitwear on the market now.

Wondering what to wear with your knit other than jeans? Free People have taken care of it with a matching co-ord that comes in no less than 4 colourways.
