This Spring Item Is Already Elevating All My Outfits

If I were to describe my personal style, “maximalist” would not be one of the first words that spring to mind. However, I do seem to have a bit of a magpie eye for certain bold prints, especially when they appear on a pair of high-waisted trousers. Perhaps it’s a trend that speaks to my inner vintage nerd, but there’s something so chic about pairing brightly coloured, cropped, and flared trousers with a simple white shirt and heeled boots. Whether it’s a classic checkerboard or a cheeky leopard print, statement trousers have essentially become my go-to method for elevating spring basics—think white T-shirts, crew-neck knits, and beige trench coats.

Thanks to the pattern-design skills of Barcelona-based fashion brand Paloma Wool, I’ve been drooling over certain graphic prints that are featured on its sell-out knitted trousers. Its latest iteration is a bold monochrome check, but I also have a soft spot for the blue and brown Orinocco style. Many other brands have followed suit with similar skin-tight and flared silhouettes, but there is also a generous offering of wide-legged styles that will be equally as flattering.  If quirky, primary-coloured swirls aren’t your thing, then a classic plaid or check might be a more appealing option. ASOS’s lime-green, high-waisted trousers are begging to be worn with a white roll-neck and beige leather jacket for a ’70s finish, while Gucci’s cream checks would make for a lovely pairing with a classic trench coat. That being said, the “WFH Joy” who has spent the last nine months in loungewear can’t resist the draw of those elasticated Paloma Wool styles, so they’re definitely going to the top of my wish list for spring. Just style with slippers and a cashmere jumper for cosy January evenings and then, come summer, just add Birkenstocks and a white tee. Selena is a big fan of Paloma Wool’s Claudia trousers, and now I am, too.

Alyssa shows us the statement-making powers of checked trousers, even when worn with just a long-sleeve top and slippers.

Animal print is a classic option and is a sure-fire way to make a colourful coat pop, as seen here on Nnenna.
