US Open will go ahead behind closed doors, says New York governor Cuomo

  • Andrew Cuomo says grand slam will begin on 31 August
  • Nick Kyrgios has criticised ‘selfish’ plan to hold tournament

The 2020 US Open will go ahead behind closed doors at the end of August, although the news came from New York state’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, who pre-empted the official announcement by 24 hours.

Cuomo took the sport by surprise when he announced the news at his daily briefing on Tuesday afternoon. “We’re excited about the US Open,” the Democrat governor said. “It’s going to be held in Queens from 31 August to 13 September 13. It will be held without fans, but we can watch it on TV – and I’ll take that.”
