Zdeno Chara won’t be returning to the Boston Bruins after agreeing to a one-year deal with the Washington Capitals.
Chara will turn 44 in March and is coming off a deal that paid him $3.75 million last season but had a $2-million cap hit. He spent the past 14 seasons with Boston and will play his 23rd campaign.
Through 1,553 career games, sixth all-time by a defenceman, Chara has 202 goals and 656 points. He won the Norris in 2009, was a finalist five other times and led the Bruins to three Stanley Cup Finals, including a win in 2011.
As a result of the NHL’s realignment for the 2021 season, the Bruins and Capitals will play against each other in the same division and will play each other eight times.
