19 Classic Summer Pieces I Always Buy From the High Street

Let’s get one thing straight: classic doesn’t have to mean basic. I’m making this point from the off because I think it’s important to distinguish what we’re talking about here. When I say classic summer pieces, I mean items I wear for the duration of the warmer weather. It’s the floral dress I wear every time I have dinner with friends, the loose vest top I put on when there’s a heatwave and the chunky sandals I pair with practically everything. But it can also mean some fun printed trousers, a bright-pink midi or a satin slip skirt. Classic here translates as items I wear all the time that are ideal for summer, and they don’t have to be neutral or pared-back.

In my quest for the ultimate high-street summer essentials, I’ve managed to work out where to find the best pieces from each shop. Thanks to the privilege of basically shopping for work, I’ve honed down the perfect high-street summer items from all of my favourite affordable stores. So whether you’re looking for the ultimate linen shirt (you can’t beat Arket) or after a fabulous swimsuit (hats off to & Other Stories for being a total winner in that department), I’ve got your whole summer wardrobe sorted, and it’s all from the high street. Keep scrolling for more.

There are three things I love going to Arket for in the summer: shirts, sandals and hats. This year, I’m very into the linen pieces plus the super-cool flatform sandals and the wide-brim hat.

So easy to wear with wide-leg trousers.

The back strap makes them extra comfy.

The coolest way to keep your face out of the sun.

I recently bought one of COS’s Breton tops, and I have worn it on repeat. Just the right side of boxy, it’s the ultimate summer top. Also, look to this store for oversized dresses and cool bags.

Makes a nice change from navy and white.

So easy to throw on.

The tan and black versions of this have sold out so many times.

Dresses, dresses and more dresses is how I’d describe Mango for summer. From chic cotton frocks that are great for work to fun polka-dot numbers that are ideal for weddings, there’s so much on offer you’ll definitely find something you love.

The perfect wedding guest look.

360-degree perfection.

The most joyful shade.

Want something a bit more fun when it comes to your summer wardrobe? Head to Zara for printed trousers, colourful blazers and white jeans.

You can get a matching top, too.

So cool.

A slight crop will show off a great pair of sandals.

I bought a linen-mix vest top from H&M last year and constantly wear it. The high-street store is great for finding wardrobe basics, but if you want something colourful, you can’t go wrong with the brand’s pink dresses.

This also comes in classic black and khaki.

So easy to style.

The smock top is so flattering.

Who doesn’t love a great going-out top for the summer? & Other Stories always delivers the goods when it comes to the aforementioned. Plus, it’s a winner for midi skirts and swimsuits.

A vest will go the distance in your wardrobe.

Naturally I also want the matching top.

So very chic.

Another place to find great sandals is Marks and Spencer. This season, the brand has excelled with its flatform sandals. The other items you need to know about are its floral dresses and great summer-friendly jackets.

I wear mine on repeat.

So pretty.

Just throw on over your floral dress.
